Ingredients:
1 kg chicken (cut into medium pieces, washed and drained)
2 large onions (1 to boil chicken, 1 for frying)
1 tomato
1/2 coconut, grated (for roce)
1 large potato (cubed)
salt to taste
1 tbsp ghee
1-2 tbsp coriander leaves (optional)
To dry roast then grind:
8 long byadgi chillies
4 small round chillies (motwi mirsaang)
2 tbsp coriander seeds
1 tsp jeera/ cumin seeds
6-8 pepper corns
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
2 small pieces cinnamon
3-4 cloves
2 cardamom
4 cloves garlic
1/4 tsp methi/fenugreek seeds
1 sprig karipatta / curry leaves
Grind the above dry roasted ingredients with:
1/2 cup grated coconut
1 tsp tamarind paste
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
Steps:
- Extract thick and thin coconut milk from fresh coconut and keep both aside separately. (see notes)
- Boil the chicken with thin coconut milk, 1 sliced onion, 1 chopped tomato and keep aside.
- Dry roast the ingredients and then add to a mixie jar with the grated coconut, tamarind, turmeric and a little water. Grind to a fine paste and keep aside.
- In a cooking vessel, heat ghee. Add a sliced onion and fry till golden brown.
- Add the ground masala and fry for 7-10 minutes.
- Add some of the chicken broth with the cooked chicken, onions and tomatoes and bring to a boil.
- Add 1 cup of thick coconut roce and bring to a boil on medium flame (don't over cook) and turn off the flame.
- Garnish with coriander leaves (optional)

Notes:
To prepare coconut milk, you can either use fresh grated coconut or coconut milk powder
If you are using fresh coconut to prepare coconut milk
- Thick coconut milk: Take 1/2 shredded coconut and grind with 1/2 cup of warm water and strain it into a bowl covered with muslin cloth and squeeze it.
- Thin coconut milk: Transfer the ground coconut back into the grinder and add required amount of water and repeat the process.
If you are using coconut milk powder to prepare thick coconut milk
- Thick coconut milk: Dissolve 3 tbsp of coconut milk powder in 1/2 cup of warm water
- Thin coconut milk: Dissolve 3 tbsp of coconut milk powder in 1 cup of warm water
