Dal Ghosht (mutton with dal) - Jean

Ingredients:

500 gms mutton
250 gms moong dal
1 big onion (chopped)
4-5 cloves garlic (chopped)
1 1/2" ginger (chopped)
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chili powder
1 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
1 1/2 tsp pepper powder
1 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
4-5 green chilis
pinch of amchoor/raw mango powder
2 tbsp ghee
salt

Steps:

  1. Boil the mutton and the dal together with the ginger and 1/2 tsp salt till the dal is tender, not fully cooked. Separate the dal and mutton from the broth and save the broth. 

  2. In a large cooking vessel, heat ghee.
  3. Add cumin seeds and fry lightly. 
  4. Add garlic and onions and fry till onions are light brown. 
  5. Add the boiled mutton and dal and mix well. Let it cook for 2 minutes.
  6. Add the green chilies, red chili powder, salt, pepper powder, garam masala powder and mix well.
  7. When the ghee starts to separate, slowly add the broth a little at a time according to desired consistency and keep stirring.
  8. Cook covered on low heat until the mutton is fully cooked.
  9. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and amchoor powder. 
  10. Serve hot with bread or rice.

Notes:

  • You can use chana dal (Bengal Gram) instead of moong dal.
