Toker Dal (Sour Dal - Bengali Style) - Jean

Ingredients:

1 cup mixed dal (preferably orange masoor dal)
3 small tomatoes
2-3 red round chilies/motwi mirsaang
2-3 green chilies
2 sprigs curry leaves
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp turmeric powder 
1/2 tsp red chili powder
ghee
3 tbsp jaggery
1 tsp salt to taste

Steps:

  1. Soak the dal in water for 1 hour. 

  2. In a vessel, heat ghee. 
  3. Add mustard seeds, red round chilies and curry leaves. 
  4. Once the mustard seeds splutter, add the tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt and jaggery. Mix well and stir for 2-3 minutes. 
  5. Add the dal and stir for 2-3 minutes. 
  6. Add water and boil till the dal is cooked.
  7. ENJOY!
Notes:
  • If desired, you can add 1" ginger (chopped) and 3-4 cloves garlic when adding the mustard seeds.
  • Adjust the jaggery to your taste. The dish must be mildly sweet.
