Turkish Green Lentils with Lamb (Etli Mercimek Yemeği) - Jean

Ingredients:
500 gms mutton
500 gms green lentils
1 big onion (chopped)
1 big carrot (chopped)
1 big potato (chopped)
5-6 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
3 tbsp tomato paste
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp pepper powder
salt
3-4 tbsp oil

Steps:
  1. Soak the green lentils in water for 1-2 hours, drain and keep aside.

  2. In a large vessel, add the mutton and 3 cups of water. As it boils, remove the foam that forms at the top.
  3. Boil till the water reduces completely in the vessel.
  4. In the same vessel, heat oil.
  5. Add the onions and mix with the mutton. Fry till onions turn golden brown.
  6. Add the tomato paste and mix well. 
  7. Add the carrots and mix well. Cook for 2 minutes. 
  8. Add the potatoes and mix well. Cook for 2 minutes.
  9. Add the garlic, chili powder, pepper powder and salt. Mix well. 
  10. Add the green lentils, mix it well. 
  11. Then add 4-5 cups water till the mutton and lentils are completely submerged.
  12. Cook covered for about an hour on low heat. Stir occasionally.
